The Eagle and the Sun
The Eagle and the Sun Our striving and God’s grace. The golden eagle circled the sky above the treetops and along a mountainside. Fog drifted lazily down the valley below him, obscuring any small, four legged meals that might be his. But his eyes were not fixed below him. He was looking up, and all he could see was a great, thick mass of clouds that blocked the sun. He had to see the sun. Climbing higher, he flew into a tuft of cloud, then a wisp and another tuft. But above him hung a gray mass. He caught…
Supreme Morality
The Supreme Court takes up gay marriage, along with a slew of other cases. Some kind of history will be made. We always hope that the truth wins over falsehood. But a deeper, more realistic, question is which truth or truths will prevail over others? We have traditional truths implicitly held by societies for centuries. We have constitutional truths. We have biblical truths. We have truths as special interest groups create them to fit their views of the world. Tweet
The Con Man Like the Rest of Us
The con man gets caught. Christopher Chichester… or Clark Rockefeller… or Christian Gerhartsreiter (his real name) has been conning and falsely impersonating his way through life. The supposed British aristocrat, Hollywood producer, whatever, is on trial for murder. The incident happened long before he married, not telling his wife who he was, and later kidnapping his daughter. This guy needs some direction. Yet if I step back from the whole circus of this man’s life, I wonder if he’s more similar to other people that we think. Tweet
Sequestration Irritation
courtesy of www.health.mil I’ve gotten fed up with politicians who treat their politics more like hard-core religion than governing. Republicans and Democrats alike. And there are few countries where it’s any better. Faith and its practice is where a person should take a firm, immovable stand. But governing is not faith; it’s doing what’s best for the population, and unlike faith, compromise is appropriate and necessary. But politicians politick more than govern. And it’s all about power and votes and getting what “we” want, and vilifying the other side. If you’ve been affected by the sequestration, perhaps you feel similarly. What to do? I’m…
Wealth Inequality in America
I was astonished by this video on wealth inequality in America. By many estimates it is as bad, and getting worse, than that of many third world countries. Biblically, there’s nothing wrong with wealth. It’s neutral. But it takes on the ethical dimensions of whomever’s hands it in. And given the way most of the wealth is used, we can say that things aren’t very biblical. Tweet
